Make Your LinkedIn Profile Public
Updated: Dec 20, 2022
As we all know, LinkedIn is a social networking platform used globally by professionals to connect with clients, colleagues and potential customers. To meet your professional goals, it naturally makes sense to make your profile public. Clients often have these questions:
Can anyone view my public profile?
How do I set up a public profile?
Can all my profile information be seen or just some of it?
About LinkedIn Public Profiles
LinkedIn does not deliver public profiles with your default settings, so you must set them up. Once you do, people NOT logged into LinkedIn will be able to find you via Google, Yahoo!, Bing, and other search engines.

Public Profiles are Easily Searchable
Many recruiters search public profiles from outside LinkedIn because of the steep charges to search from within the network.
If LinkedIn experiences outages and goes down, your profile is still available and able to be found by recruiters. Due to the size of the network, this could potentially happen.
Your public profile can show up based on searches for your name, company, or other keywords associated with you and your brand. Recruiters do these searches all the time.
For example, if I search “elev8 resumes coaching” using Google, my website, my public LinkedIn profile, my Google Business Account and Instagram accounts all appear.
Tip!: Adding your email address to your “About” section will allow recruiters to contact you without logging into LinkedIn.
How to Set Up and View Your Public Profile
To set up your profile:
1. Click “Me” on the top of your profile.
2. Then click “Settings & Privacy”
3. Then click “Visibility”
4. Then click “Edit your public profile”
In the left column of the page, you can see how your public profile displays on the left side of the page and display options can be seen on the right.
Brand/Personalize Your Public URL
LinkedIn delivers public profile URL’s that look like this: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisa-dupras-1234567. Luckily, you can brand and customize your URL (also called a vanity URL).
Get creative and set yourself apart! Some options are:
Add your credentials (linkedin.com/Lisa-Dupras-MBA)
Add your business name (linkedin.com/Dupras-Elev8Coaching)
Add your company name (linkedin.com/Dupras-IBM)
Set Your Profile to Public
Next, edit what’s publicly visible on your profile:
Click the button to make your profile visible (“public”)
Then decide who can view your photo.
Determine which sections of your profile to share, the more you feel comfortable sharing the better.
Logout of LinkedIn and Google “your name AND LinkedIn” and check your public profile.
Avoid hiding information unless you have a compelling reason to do so. The more information people can see the better.
Tip! If you show up in search results and someone who is out of your network clicks through, your LinkedIn privacy settings will determine how much information they see.
A Great Option
As you can see, a public profile is a great additional way to be ‘found’.
If you are a job seeker, making your LinkedIn profile public is another tool to maximize your exposure.
If you are an entrepreneur or salesperson, your public profile can share crucial information with clients or customers as well.
